Please note this blog is a short review of Bonnie Park Campsite and not our business. If you do wish to book with the campsite please contact them directly. The link to there web-site is: Bonnie Park
After a week in Italy with Julie on our first proper holiday abroad, just the two of us since we got together in 2007, we didn’t want to get straight back into real life!
As the weekend after our return was free of any weddings it seemed the perfect opportunity to re-ground with a relaxing trip away in the Motorhome, before the madness of August weddings is upon us.
Julie had spotted a campsite just over an hour away that we hadn’t been to called Bonnie Park, in a place we had never heard of before called Bonchester Bridge.
It seemed strange to me that Julie was so decisive about going to this particular campsite as being a typical Libra she normally says ‘Whatever you want to do, I’m happy either way’. I had to question the certainty of the decision and soon found out that the owners of the campsite have been boasting otter sightings. In fact if you see the local otter and get a photo as proof, you can win a couple of free nights on the site.
That was us, we booked up and headed off late on the Friday night. On arrival the friendly owners greeted us and showed us to our pitch. The pitches are lovely and ideal if you have a campervan or motorhome with an awning. Its hard standing pitches with a good plot of grass beside each one, they feel private but you can still take in the atmosphere of the camp-site.
We got talking to the owners who were enjoying a couple of drinks by candlelight on one of the benches. They were really friendly and we had a good laugh with them. It turns out without knowing we had booked the campsite on the very first week of opening. It was full of VW campervans as well which made us all laugh. The VDub community miss nothing!
The atmosphere of the site is almost unique as its a quiet site but has a sort of festival feel about it. I am not sure if its because of all the VW campers or people sitting out and enjoying the actual camping rather than going off the site. The first night was a lovely relaxing experience where we talked to a few people and drank wine under our awning with the gas lamp providing a romantic low light, who needs Italy really and it was just as warm.
The next day we decided to go for a walk and try and see the otter but unfortunately it didn’t happen for us. We walked the general area but to be honest this campsite works better as a base. There isn’t so much to do in the immediate area but plenty of places to visit a short drive away.
Hawick or Jedburgh are both a 15 minute drive away.
Kielder Forest is about a 30 minute drive away.
Its pretty much the gateway to the Scottish Borders, so not only a great place to start exploring, a relaxing place to just unwind but also a really lovely drive on very scenic roads.
The facilities on the campsite are immaculate and the shower and toilet block have been finished to the highest standard. They could contend for Loo of the Year which is an actual thing and the loo rolls have little dogs on them! Who said men don’t notice the detail, we do when on the toilet.
The ace card for Bonnie Park is the Horse Country Inn which is a stones throw away from the site. Please take my word for this and don’t throw stones to check the distance, they have had 3 broken windows this year alone!!
We ate at the pub on the Saturday and the food was fantastic. It was high quality produce, we were served quickly and well looked after by friendly staff. The pub is also open for breakfast from 8 – 10am and I believe its local butchers produce that is being provided. Lunch is 12 – 2pm and evening meals are served 5 – 8pm (7 days a week). Tea and Coffee are available all day.
I recommend making a booking to avoid disappointment which can be done by e-mail: [email protected] or Tel: 01450 860645
Alternatively have a BBQ at your camping pitch and experience that little happy feeling you only get now and then as an adult!
I wish the owners all of the success in the world with the new venture, we will be back.
